Claire Culwell spoke at two Vitae Foundation events this week.  For insights into her story, please read the related article on our website.  For additional thoughts Claire shared with Vitae, here are a few…

On Today’s Culture…

It’s really encouraging to see that our country is becoming more of a pro-life country.  I hope that you are encouraged by the signs you are seeing, but we still live in a very backwards culture.  In fact, on June first there was an abortionist inIndiawho recently was arrested because he dodged restrictions on sex-selection abortion by feeding aborted baby girls to dogs.  That is the kind of culture we live in today.  We care more in our culture today about shelter animals and their well being than about our own children’s lives.  Things are happening lately in our country with abortion clinics shutting down and clinic workers leaving and men and women choosing life because of organizations like Vitae.  I’m really excited that you are here with me tonight to support this organization.

On Abortion in America Today…

I was told my entire life about grace, about love, about forgiveness; but one thing that I never heard from the pulpit was what an amazing gift life is.  It is such a shame because one in three women are having abortions in our country today.  One in three women means one in three men as well.  A lot of times the men are forgotten.  One in every four caucasion babies is aborted.  One in three Latino babies is aborted, and one in every two African American babies that is conceived is aborted.  In our country today the African American population is on a decline.  The number one cause of death is abortion.

On Why it’s Important to Take a Stand…

It’s encouraging for me to be able to support an organization like Vitae because we can prevent the pain of abortion from the start, and we can replace it with smiles, giggles, and hugs from a child.  Last September there were about 1,500 homes that burned down in centralTexas; it made national news.  The entire nation stood up and said they would help these people who lived about 45 minutes from where I live inAustin.  They said they would help them rebuild their houses and help them with clothes and other essentials.  I was very supportive of helping them, but I couldn’t help but realize that there are 4,000 children losing their lives to abortion every day while we are silent as a country.  We’re silent.  We’ve got to take a stand, and tonight is your first step.  Maybe it’s your second.  But it’s a step toward standing up and verbally telling people what you believe.  It’s one thing to come to an event and consider it your pro-life event for the year.  It’s another thing to stand up for it.  Continually support organizations like Vitae.  Continually talk about it.  That’s how we end abortion in our country today.

On Her Aborted Twin…

Not long after I met my birth mother, I attended a conference.  A woman came up to me and asked if I knew the sex of my twin, and I said, “No, I really don’t.”  She said, “Just pray about it, and God can reveal that to you.”  I walked away and thought, “OK lady, you are way too charismatic for me,” so I just kept walking, I took about five steps, and I knew.  I knew that my twin was a boy.  I remembered asking my parents where my brother was when I was little.  It wasn’t, “I wish I had a brother.”  It wasn’t, “Shouldn’t I have a brother?” or “Could I have a brother?” It was: “I have a brother.  Where is he?  Something is missing.”
